« On the Analytic-Continental Divide : Reflections from Astride the Saddle »
The division between the so-called analytic and continental traditions in philosophy is an in-house dispute that has little currency or even visibility outside the discipline. Even within university halls, the divide functions more like a de-militarized zone, with practitioners working away quietly on either side, with only occasional shots being fired when a diplomatic row arises over something like a new hire. Nonetheless, these institutional banalities reflect real differences in content, methods, and aims that often remain unspoken and un-« analyzed, » and this paper will attempt a philosophical reflection on the philosophical presuppositions that gave rise to and still maintain the divide.

« On Philosophical Implications of Topos Theory : Ethics, Ontology, and Logic in Levinas, Badiou, and Analytic Philosophy »
The starting point of this paper is between Grothendieck’s ontological approach and Badiou’s logical approach to topos theory. Then, from the perspective thus established, I proceed to the exploration of the relationships—differences, affinities, and possible intersections—between ethics, ontology, and logic in Levinas, Badiou, and (more conjecturally) analytic philosophy.
Arkady Plotnitsky est professeur au département d’Anglais, de Théorie et d’Etudes culturelles de l’Université de Purdue. Il est également directeur du Theory and Cultural Studies Program, et co-directeur du Philosophy and Literature Program. Ses recherches croisent les domaines de la philosophie contemporaine, de la philosophie des sciences (mathématiques) et des études littéraires.
